Within the past decade, people in the world, especially young ones, have witnessed the emergence of the K-pop industry. When it comes to this industry, people would immediately think of beautiful singers with splendid clothes on stage. With that being said, there are many times when a lot of these singers (most of the time are females) are forced to wear outfits that they do not like, and one of the most common reasons is because it is too revealing and makes them feel uncomfortable. As some of us may know, besides singing, idols will perform the song with choreography on stage, so wearing short or revealing clothes may become very inconvenient for them when they perform on stage. It is not rare to find idols adjusting their clothes countlessly during their performance, so this article will explain why stylists must be aware of this and make sure it will not happen in the future so that female idols will not have to endure this.

To begin with, there are tons of female idols who are caught on camera struggling with their outfits, and one good example is Rose from Blackpink. Rose is renowned for having great performing skills on stage, but many fans noticed that she was not comfortable with her short dress during one of her performances in 2017. When Rose wore that dress on stage, it was too short that her cycling shorts just kept showing, so she had to adjust the dress multiple times. Of course, Rose is not the only one who has to endure this, and this is not a new topic in this industry. Many stylists have been asked about their intention when they make these revealing outfits for idols, and many of them had the same answer which was that these clothes are designed to match the concept of the performance. The question is: “Is that necessary? Could it be less showing and still fit the concept?” The aestheticity in stage outfits is crucial, but the performance of the singers are much more important. The first priority of performing clothes must be comfortability, as it should be designed to assist the idols to show their best on stage.

On the other hand, there are many times when idols must wear summer clothes during winter on stage, and it has made it extremely difficult for these singers to perform. One case in point, Red Velvet (a Korean girl group) once wore short dresses and performed at the special New Year’s stage of MBC Gayo Daejun in -1 degrees Celsius. It was freezing cold, and these singers must wear short dresses to perform while other people wear layers of clothes to keep themselves warm. These singers are human, of course they can feel the cold! Once again, performing outfits are important, these singers’ health must be prioritized.

In sum, K-pop idols, especially females, must be given appropriate clothes on stage. Comfortability must be top priority when it comes to stage outfits since it should help singers or idols feel comfortable so that they can focus on their performance.

In my country, many women are taught to obey their husbands unconditionally so that their husbands will stay with them and they will not cheat on them. That was a true story that I have heard from my teachers at school, who had to live with that obsolete mindset for her entire life. Speaking of myself, I have experienced it, too. My parents taught me to do the housework when I was eight years old, but when my brother turned nine, they didn’t teach him to do anything, like I did. I asked them: “Why don’t you teach him to do the chores?”. Then, they answered: “He is a boy, so he won’t need to do these things.”. I know it doesn’t mean they love my brother more than me, but they think that chores are supposed to be women’s jobs and responsibilities, according to our “culture”. The reason for this is because these rules have existed for so long and it has been inherited by many generations so it makes people believe that this is the normal thing that every “good” girl needs to learn. As a woman in this society, I think it is the right time for me to speak up for myself and fight for my rights as well as many other women around the world, and that is the reason why I want to give a voice in SHEQUALITY. I hope that we can raise awareness about sexism and get rid of the obsolete mindsets in our society.
